Sometimes an advisor does not do the first two critical tasks effectively: Listen and engage. Whether retained for business or organizational issues, making proposals and producing solutions to help solve problems requires collaboration.
Employees, managers, or investors in a company are not there by happenstance. They are there because they want to be. Throughout a career, one makes choices about industries, functional specialties, and levels of attainment.
Collaboration enters the picture when an advisor can help decipher what is going to work best. And what may not work. It is often the case that individuals are not cut out for the level of participation/execution to which they are presently assigned. This is not fatal; it is just a fact. We have all seen people who were in the right place at the right time to achieve a promotion – even though they were not prepared for what happened next.
Collaborating with staff members to understand what alternatives are realistic is both uplifting and stress reducing. Being the advisory partner along the way to a journey of success certainly beats the tendency to propose a sterile, one-size fits all outcome. There is no script for how we work. We strive to work from within, through collaboration.
